There are countless suggestions out there for packing strategies. Here are my top tips:
Think it Through - Start by considering the physical limitations such as the baggage constraints of the airline or trunk space. Will you be able to do laundry on this trip? How much can everyone comfortably carry? Consider the types of outfits and items you will need. Plan for your activity level, weather, and the cultural considerations (bare shoulders or knees) of your destination.
Color Coordinate - I choose one main color (navy) that pairs well with neutrals like denim, khaki, and white, along with an accent color (yellow). This approach works for us because whenever I find something on sale in our color scheme, I purchase it. Over time, we've gathered a nice collection of complementary clothes for any weather. Remember that tops and bottoms of the same color don't always match perfectly. Be sure to include plenty of neutrals to mix, match, and add variety.
Be Selective - (This one is for my Mom and all the other over-packers out there!) Concentrate on what you absolutely need and try to limit non-essential items. This is different for everyone. I can manage without collagen in my coffee, face serums, and a sound machine, but I always make space for a deck of cards. Carefully consider what you can remove to lighten your load.
Lay it out - Move items from your maybe pile to a for sure pile. This is the time to try things on together and make sure they actually look and feel good. When your for sure pile is finalized, you can pack everything into your luggage.
Find Your System - My Mom likes to plan complete outfits for each day, including accessories, and photograph them. Some people prefer packing cubes. I developed a comprehensive packing list as a starting point, so I don't have to reinvent the wheel each time. I simply remove the categories that aren't relevant.
